Zepsars™ Info Sheet
Zepsars™ nasal spray is an over the counter nasal gel intended for use for the treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and related upper respiratory type allergies. The common cold is generally caused by an estimated two hundred viruses known as rhinoviruses. These viruses, which primarily infect the upper respiratory tract, may enter the body through the nose, mouth, or eyes, with the infection cycle beginning in the nasal cavity. Inside the nasal cavity, the virus infects the body by binding to ICAM-1 (Intercellular adhesion molecule-1) receptor sites located on the cells that line the nasal passageway. The virus enters those cells through the ICAM-1 binding site, and then uses the cells' own genetic material to replicate and infect the body. As the virus infects more and more nasal cells, the body's immune system is overwhelmed, leading to a full-blown cold.
Unlike most other over the counter and prescription cold remedies which typically were designed only to suppress or mask cold symptoms, Zepsars™ was designed to treat the duration and severity of the cold. Research suggests that ionic zinc in Zepsars™ fills the grooves or canyons on the rhinovirus thus inhibiting or blocking the virus's ability to bind with the ICAM-1 receptor sites on the cells lining the nasal cavity, preventing or interrupting the infection cycle. Colds that typically last for 10-14 days can be eradicated in an average of 2 days.
New research confirms the efficacy of zincum gluconicum nasal gel in reducing the severity and duration of common cold symptoms when treatment is started as late as the second day of illness. The study, which appears in the January issue of QJM: An International Journal of Medicine, was the first trial on the naturally acquired common cold to extend initiation of treatment beyond the first 24 hours of illness.
"All previous evaluations of zincum gluconicum nasal gel's effect on the naturally acquired common cold limited initiation of treatment to the first 24 hours of symptoms," explained Sherif B. Mossad, MD, FACP, FIDSA, Department of Infectious Diseases, Cleveland Clinic Foundation. "We now have findings to document a significant reduction in severity and duration of symptoms even when treatment is started as late as 48 hours after onset of illness."
Dr. Mossad said his study adds to a growing body of evidence supporting the effectiveness of zincum gluconicum nasal gel in reducing nasal drainage, nasal congestion, sore throat, and other symptoms typical of virus-induced rhinitis (inflammation of the mucous membranes of the nose).
